This “Advanced Soil Health Training” program is being offered to ag professionals/consultants in the region. The training series is focused on science-based agronomic practices and systems to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of our soil resources.

About the Event

Byron Seeds will  host six 2-day workshops over the course of 12-18 months. Workshops will take place at farm locations in West-Central Indiana and the Wisconsin Dells to expose you to multiple cropping systems and soil types.  The following dates have been set for the first three workshops :

Indiana

  • April 13-14 - Turkey Run State Park and Byron Seeds (Rockville)
  • July 26-27 - Turkey Run State Park and Attica, IN
  • September 26-27 (tentative) - Turkey Run State Park and location TBD

Wisconsin 

  • April 20-21 - Wintergreen 
  • July 28-29
  • September 26-27

Remaining dates and locations have not yet been set, and trainees will have input into dates and locations.  Topics will include the following and more:

  • Introduction to soil health, Management Principles, Soil Biology and Soil Function Demonstrations
  • Farming/cropping systems for soil health, including soil health in-field assessment
  • Nutrient management and soils
  • Cover crop management, including selection, planting, termination, equipment, herbicide considerations, and more
  • New technologies for soil health, including integrated pest management
  • Social considerations, ecological services and economics of soil health
  • Field observation, hands-on activities and demonstrations will be included at each session

The training is progressive, and we will require trainees to attend at least 4 of the 6 workshops. For workshops missed, trainees are expected to review the materials covered (recorded presentations/demonstrations, handouts, etc.) Following the workshop series, each trainee will commit to participating in at least one outreach event in his/her local area. Trainees will receive a certificate verifying their completion of advanced soil health training and CEUs for CCAs are available.
